➺ Piano Tuning
Piano tuning is the most basic and important aspect of piano maintenance. Even if it isn’t being played on a regular basis, a piano should be tuned at least once a year. This keeps the string tension and the “load” on the soundboard at the proper level. When tuning is neglected for many years, the strings go flat. More expensive and frequent tuning will be required to bring the piano back to pitch and get it to stay in tune. It may even be impossible to tune an older piano, which has gone too far flat, due to the risk of breaking strings.

Voicing is the manipulation of the felted wool hammers to make them harder or softer to achieve the tonal characteristics desired by the artist. The “action” of a piano is the mechanical system which connects the pianist’s fingers with the hammers striking the strings. A well regulated action gives the pianist speed of repetition, dynamic control and ease in playing. Concert pianos should undergo a full regulation once a year, home pianos on an “as needed” basis, with a ten year schedule being common.
